THE IMPORTANCE OF USING SAFETY EQUIPMENT IN
OUR CLASSES
I would like to explain why we use Safety Equipment in our classes and the benefits our students receive by practicing with it. First, as the name implies, it is for the safe practice of martial arts. There are times in our class when we practice the form of movements (with basics, techniques, and katas). There are also times when we practice hitting targets. And there are times when we work with partners. With all of these we emphasize safe practice with discipline. Now with the use of protective equipment, we can practice various blocking, punching and kicking techniques with ‘light contact’ and nobody gets hurt…and it is fun! Second, the benefits of using Safety Equipment in the classes are immense. A student will learn a better sense of accuracy, control, distance and timing. This will translate into much improved self-defense skills. Also, when the student practices self-defense techniques for grabs, etc. s/he will be able to judge the distance to the intended targets much better. Third, we are always concerned about the ‘comfort zone’ of each of our students. Therefore, when we practice we make sure that the students tell their partner if they want their partner to go easier or harder, slower or faster. If they are timid about it, they can talk to their teacher to ensure that this practice is comfortable for them. Also, our teachers monitor for the safety of all students. Remember, that the use of Safety Equipment is for ‘light contact’ practice. It is intended to ‘go to the target, not through the target’. We hope that all parents and students see this as an exercise for everyone to gain more self-control in a safe environment. This is to be encouraged. Finally, the drills done in class will be focused on ‘partner drills’, not competitive sparring. We have optional sparring classes for that. The drills and exercises will be based around applying the various blocks, punches and kicks in a cooperative environment. This will improve how a student reacts to various punches and kicks coming at him or her. When students practice defense against grabs, etc. they gain abilities and confidence. Now, they will feel confident if a punch or kick is the attack because they will know what to do and how to do it. I think you will agree with me that Confidence will grow. Martial arts skills will improve. Understanding of the martial arts will expand. Abilities will develop in a safe manner. And we will all have fun. |
