Message from the Master by Jim Clapp Over the past month, we’ve been cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies major league baseball team to win the division, the playoff games, the league championship, and now the World Series…baseball’s biggest team prize! At least in this area and at least some of us have been doing that. Hooray for those of us who’ve been doing just that, and are seeing a professional sports championship come to this part of the country. It’s a long time (since 1983 with the basketball 76ers…and since 1980 with the Phillies last doing it). Wow! It’s been a long time when I think of it…and I’ve been a fan for about 50 years! Let’s recap this year. The season started in February with Spring Training with workouts and the sorting out who will be on the team. Then the pre-season games in March began. Finally, the regular season started in April. It is now October. That’s a long time to be playing baseball or any sport for that matter. Did you know that baseball has twice the number of regular season games as the next pro sports teams (162 to NHL’s hockey or NBA’s basketball who each have 82). To win the World Series a team has to play roughly eight months. That’s a lot of traveling on airplanes and going to cities across the country on regular basis. That’s a long time to keep the body healthy to play this rigorous sport…to keep mentally sharp…and, to keep emotionally on an even keel. But, what can this teach us? What can we gain out of it other than a big shout out for the Philadelphia Phillies? What can we take with us that will help us in our lives? I would like to give you my thoughts on this now. First, the Phillies had to have a vision of what they wanted to accomplish. Then, they had to play together as a Team…give up their own personal egos and goals and put those of the team first. Their goal had to be to win the World Series as a team! Next, they had to dedicate and commit to their vision and goals in order to receive the benefits of winning the World Series at season’s end. They had to have patience and perseverance to go with the self-discipline that was needed everyday regardless of the circumstances. Every player and the manager, coaches and staff had to take it one game at a time (live in the present moment) and keep their eye on the prize while doing it one day at a time. They had to overcome obstacles and challenges that occurred with injuries, slumps, personal undertakings, losing stretches, the loss of players, accepting new players onto the team, the media, traveling, etc. But, finally the payoff…the goal has been reached. The Phillies are the 2008 World Series Champions!!! And, those of us who decided to follow them are smiling now…we got to cheer…we got to high five…we got to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel…And, we are better for the experience. The Fightin’ Phils did us proud. As I always say, we may not have it all together, but together we have it all. This is Teamwork. This is an example Black Belt Excellence. Let us reflect on what it takes to be a winner in everyday life and live the spirit… Special Classes This Month!Nov. 1st thru Nov. 22nd—AKS Annual Canned Food Drive to Benefit the Delaware Food Bank Wed—Nov. 12th—JR Falling Class w/ Mr. John Week of Nov. 10th—Secret Santa Sale!
