MESSAGE
FROM THE MASTER
By Jim Clapp
This area will
change on a monthly basis. Please check back each month. This
area may provide inspiration and motivation for your daily life...
We need to protect our children and give them the best future possible.
We’ve all heard this or thought this before. But, what does it all mean? I
would like to give you my view in this message.
One of the character traits that come to my mind is Resiliency…the
ability to recover
readily from illness, depression, adversity, or the like. I think that you
would agree with me on this! To be resilient one must have Respect for
oneself and others. One must be able to use Self-Control during these times.
Self Discipline needs to be exercised with Commitment, Patience, and
Perseverance to help one get thru anything.
I am happy to say that Respect, Self-Control, Self-Discipline,
Commitment, Patience and Perseverance are six (6) of our fifteen (15)
Virtues that make up the base of our Black Belt philosophy at our school. As
you know, we teach these through our Message of the Week. This is very
important, if not paramount, to practicing and teaching a holistic and
complete martial art…that is to teach the ‘inner’ (the mental and
spiritual aspects) as well as the physical (fitness and curriculum) parts of
the martial arts.
Resiliency is needed inside and outside of the classroom. Inside the
classroom, resiliency is needed if a student has a challenge in learning the
material presented; has a problem with losing interest or is bored (mind
loses intention or focus on the goals); is fearful about performing in front
of others (i.e. demonstrating his/her skills at promotions); or, has a
feeling of being overwhelmed with so much to learn or remember. One of the
best solutions is for the student or parent to talk with the teacher,
director or myself. I am sure that we can help the student thru this stage
we call “the perseverance stage’ and onward towards the ‘rewards stage’
where they attain their needs and goals. Our mission at our school is to
help each student thru the rough times and teach how to overcome any
challenges. So please allow us to help.
Using resiliency outside the classroom is very important in applying our
Black Belt Lifestyle. If one has a challenge in school or at work, please
keep what I am saying in mind. If one is going thru emotional or physical
challenges we need to keep the highest respect for ourselves and others in
mind. During this time, we may experience stress outside the norm…This is
when we need to exercise patience and perseverance. Remember we want to “Team
up…Never give up!” I think if we can teach our children these virtues,
we can teach resiliency and create champions in everyday life. As I always
say, “We may not have it all together (ourselves), but together we can
have it all.” I thank you for your support…and will support you in your
journey to become successful in all you do in life.
American Karate Studios' mission is to help
our students develop their maximum potential in life through their practice
of the Martial Arts at our school. We do this by teaching our martial arts
as a complete discipline (physically, mentally, and spiritually), which in
addition to developing an art and a self-defense system encourages the
formation of high personal standards and respect for all other beings and
our environment. Through our practice and teaching, and our student service
culture, we are constantly striving to raise our own standards and to
develop higher qualities, values, attitudes, and behaviors that are
reflected in our staff and students, which enable us to make positive
contributions to society.
We are a Black Belt School. We
practice and teach Black Belt Excellence. We practice and teach a
Black Belt Lifestyle. We practice and teach these mind-body and
spirit aspects thru the martial arts. We practice and teach the mental,
physical and spiritual aspects of the martial arts. We practice and
teach our 15 Virtues: Respect, Courtesy, Honesty, Integrity,
Self-Control, Focus, Self-Discipline, Commitment, Patience, Perseverance,
Compassion, Gratitude, Love, Peace, and Cooperation.
We practice and teach this philosophy thru
the martial arts. We practice, teach and relate this philosophy to the
various aspects of life in order to bring this consciousness, attitude and
mindset into one’s daily actions and into the community.
As you are well aware of, if we had more respect, love
and compassion for others, and ourselves, we and our society would be much
better off. Our fears would dissipate or be eliminated. By doing our part to
help nurture these qualities, we envision a better future for all of us. It
is my hope that you ‘shout from the roof tops’ and tell everyone you
know that we practice and teach this philosophy. We are always looking to
grow our AKS family with new members and spread this message. Thank you very
much for your support!!!
Tiger Woods...What can we say about arguably the greatest golfer that has
ever played the game? And, why am I writing about this in a martial arts
column? Read on and then share this with anyone, especially your children.
In the recent US Open Golf Championship, Tiger came from behind and won
the tournament in a playoff round which took 19 holes to decide the winner.
This is a remarkable and amazing feat! As we know, the next day it was
revealed that he had a torn ACL in his knee and a broken bone in his leg.
And, he knew this before the tournament but decided to play anyway.
The tournament lasted 5 days (for him and Rocco Mediate) and we all saw the
anguish and pain expressed several times each day.
Now, think of this. He knew about it ahead of time, but tried to keep it
from interfering with the task at hand...namely playing the best that he
could and hopefully winning another major championship. How many people call
in and take off work because they have a headache or something? Tiger’s
feat is a major example of goal setting, self-discipline, commitment,
patience, perseverance, and indomitable spirit. He exemplifies our
philosophy of Black Belt Excellence! And, his lifestyle expresses our Black
Belt Lifestyle. His life outside has been exemplary...no drugs, no gambling,
no DUI’s, no wife abuse and no actions which would be judged as illegal or
immoral. He is living proof today that one can live a life of excellence and
be extraordinary doing it.
Talk about overcoming obstacles and you have to put his name right there
as one of the most recent examples that has been in the public eye. I often
think of examples to use in my talks at the belt promotions each month...and
to relate one or more of our 15 Virtues (message of the week) to the
example. During my speech at the June Promotions, I used this bigger than
life experience of Tiger Woods. I wonder how many children are taught and
encouraged outside of our school that good things do happen to good people
if we stay the course and live a lifestyle of Black Belt Excellence. We need
more of this each and everyday to reinforce these virtues and instill it
into the minds and hearts that the rewards DO come after the efforts. I
would love to hear from all of our readers as to what each of you think
about these messages and how useful they are to you.
I am writing this message to share my
gratitude and appreciation for your support with my induction into the DE
Sports Museum and Hall of Fame.
I was asked what were my favorite things I liked from the experience...and I
want to share them with you now. Looking out at my driveway and seeing a
huge, long black Hummer Limousine trying to get into and down my driveway
started the whole day/night out perfectly. It was amazing...and so cool to
see most of Team AKS there inside. Wow! We all looked great and
beautiful...we set a great example for AKS and the martial arts community.
Next, was laughing with everyone all the way to the banquet inside this very
long limo! Then, meeting everyone at the banquet that came for my
induction--family, friends, and people that I hadn't seen in a long
time...There were some surprises that I never expected to see there. And, I
got very emotional when some long time acquaintenances said, "this is
long over due...we have been trying to get you in for a long time...we
finally made it...congratulations!!!"
Then, the speech was another favorite moment.
I didn't know exactly what I was going to say...just some 'themes'...So, as
most of you know who have heard me speak before, I had to 'just let it come
thru me and let it out...' Being able to talk to non-martial artists as well
as martial artists was interesting. As I expressed, I wanted to share the
deeper meaning of the martial arts from a spiritual, mental, emotional, and
physical viewpoint...and at the same time convey my gratitude in an upbeat
manner. I hope many walked out of the banquet with an expanded perception of
the values and benefits the martial arts have to offer. That is why I have
stayed with it and made if my lifestyle over the years. It is incredible to
be the first martial artist to be inducted into a State Sports Museum
and Hall of Fame in the continental USA!
I had an insight come to me on the way home...This was a historical event
that occurred on many levels. Thank you for helping me be the best I can
be...and for being able to share it with others...
Have you ever noticed that on certain days
you feel on top of the world and on other days you don’t? What do you do
on either day to set it up the way you really want it is the key to your
manifesting it. This is why you must condition your attitude everyday for
making it a great day! Think how much better you would be at everything you
do if you had a great attitude toward life and learning. If you practice
being respectful, you become more respected. If you practice looking for the
good in others, you begin to attract more of the good in others. If you
practice smiling more often, you will see more people smiling back.
Many years ago, I heard that we can’t
control all the things in our life, but we can control how we ‘react’ to
them. This made sense to me and I embarked on a life-long journey to study
and put it into practice each day. Sure there are times when we all lose it
– we get down on ourselves or others. But, that’s when the people that
support and encourage us come around. I had a friend that told me one time,
“when things are going great, everyone wants to be around you, but when
things aren’t going so well, you can tell who your friends are…”
At American Karate Studios, we teach a
philosophy of 15 Virtues (Message of the Week) and try to uplift and support
all of you in any way that we can. If we have failed, please let us know…if
we have succeeded, we would like to hear about that also. If you look around
you, so many people voice their disapproval when they don’t like
something. I call this ‘vocal disapproval’. But, when things are going
great, people tend to be silent. I call this ‘silent approval’. I think
it has been conditioned over time for whatever reasons. We need to reverse
it, don’t you think? This will have a greater positive influence on us
individually and collectively too.
I am going to list some Black Belt
Attitude Conditioning Tips:
· Wake up everyday and say “YES”
today is going to be a great day!
· Be the first to offer a
positive and polite greeting.
· Look for the good in yourself
and others (Be a Good Finder!).
· Praise and compliment your
teammates (at home, work, school or in AKS).
· Think of what you DO want, not
what you DON’T want.
· Always be happy with what you
DO have; never be unhappy with what you DON’T have.
· Share what you have learned in
life (and here) with others!
· And, if something pleases you,
tell the other person…don’t wait!
This month, I am going to be the first
full-time professional martial artist to be inducted into the Delaware
Sports Museum and Hall of Fame on May 14th. It is quite an honor.
I would like all of you to share in this tribute and experience. Tickets are
still available for the Banquet and Awards Ceremony up until May 7th.
Please let our front desk know if you will be attending. But, please know
that you are all part of this honor I am accepting…by being part of our
school you give me a way to share my knowledge, expertise and wisdom each
day. I appreciate you being here and I am grateful. If you are happy with
your experience at AKS, then “Shout it from the rooftops…tell your
friends about us!
Every once in a while we have a ‘break through’ where there is
accelerated growth. We experience it in the martial arts when we ‘finally
get it’ or perhaps when we move from one belt to the next. It may be that
we set a goal and accomplished it, or that all the practice that we’ve
done previously pays off. Whatever it is, we know it. It can come as an ‘ah
hah’; a jump in confidence; or reaching a ‘hole nother level’ in
understanding, knowledge and or abilities.
We may experience this ‘break through’ as an individual; a group; a
community; a society; or through out the world. It can occur spiritually,
mentally, emotionally and or physically. And, it can come at anytime too. We
have all had them in our lives. Collectively, we experienced it during
September 11, 2001. This event changed the world and our lives.
Recently, I was notified that I was going to be inducted May 14th
into The Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame. What an honor! This is a
lifetime achievement award! What a ‘break through’…the martial arts
are finally going to be recognized by the rest of the sports communities. I
have to tell you that the ‘traditional sports community’ has finally
moved over and accepted the first martial arts inductee into this
prestigious Hall of Fame. I give a bow of respect and gratitude to them. I
am hoping that this will pave the way for future martial arts inductees…
Upon reflecting on this event, I have greater compassion and
understanding for the ‘first’ person to ‘break through’ any barrier
that was long standing. Whether it is in sports, music, art, science,
politics, religion or any other institution or discipline, it takes
incredible patience and perseverance to overcome challenges along the way. I
am pleased to say that we teach these among our 15 virtues which compose our
‘message of the week’…This is what Black Belt Excellence is all about!
I hope you know that each of you, and the thousands before you that we have
been blessed to have taught over the years at American Karate Studios, share
in this great honor. Thank you for your support! I
The Practice of Self-Discipline
Discipline yourself to do what you know you need to do to be the very
best in your field. Perhaps the best definition of self discipline is this:
"Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do
when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not." It’s easy to
do something when you feel like it. It's when you don't feel like it and you
force yourself to do it anyway that you move your life and all else onto the
fast track. What decisions do you need to make today in order to start
moving toward what you would like to be, do or have in your life? Whatever
it is, either to get in or get out, make a decision today and then get
started. This single act alone can change the whole direction of your life.
Seven Steps to Success:
There is a powerful seven-step
formula that you can use to set and achieve your goals for the rest of your
life. Every single successful person uses this formula or some variation of
this formula to achieve vastly more than the average person. And so can you.
Here it is:
Decide What You Want
First, decide exactly what it is you want in each part of your life.
Write it Down
Second, write it down, clearly and in
detail. Always think on paper. A goal that is not in writing is not a goal
at all. It is merely a wish and it has no energy behind it.
Set A Deadline
Third, set a deadline for your goal.
A deadline acts as a "forcing system" in your subconscious mind.
It motivates you to do the things necessary to make your goal come true. If
it is a big enough goal, set sub-deadlines as well. Don't leave this to
chance.
Make A List
Fourth, make a list of everything that you can think of that you are
going to have to do to achieve your goal. When you think of new tasks and
activities, write them on your list until your list is complete.
Organize Your List
Fifth, organize your list into a plan. Decide what you will have to do
first and what you will have to do second. Decide what is more important and
what is less important. And then write out your plan on paper.
Take Action
The sixth step is for you to take
action on your plan. Do something. Do anything. But get busy. Get going.
Do Something Every Day
Do something every single day that moves you in the direction of your
most important goal at the moment. Develop the discipline of doing something
365 days each year that is moving you forward. You will be absolutely
astonished at how much you accomplish when you utilize this formula in your
life every single day.
Action Exercises
Here are two things you can do to put these ideas into action
immediately.
First, decide exactly what you want, write it down with a deadline, make a
plan and take action - on at least one goal - today!
Second, determine the price you will have to pay to achieve this goal and
then get busy paying that price - whatever it is.
“Never let a day pass that
you will have cause to say, I will do better tomorrow”… Brigham Young
We all have or have had ‘Bad
Days’. The inability to be in the moment and focus, the habit of
having your mind wander to negative thoughts (weather, you have nothing to
wear, can't pay bills, kids drive you nuts, husband is demanding, in-laws
are coming over, customer questions, pending law-suit, or the weather isn’t
cooperating...)
The ability to focus...When
you can put your blinders on and shut off all inner mind chatter (about
anything) and block out all outside noises, sounds, disruptions and
excitement, you can be powerful. This is the case with anyone who can
block problems and disturbances and daily life out while they need to be
concentrating on what they are doing. This is what we teach in our school
and is one of the main benefits of the martial arts!
You stop making stupid
mistakes. You'll be able to set aside what Aunt Martha said to you until
later so you can get done what you have to get done. You'll get more done
faster and better. You'll have an hour or two more time every day to
either get more done or to relax or to exercise. You'll have less stress
and anxiety.
In short, you'll stop having
"bad days" because you won't be bogged down by those things
everyone else can't get their minds off...because you can. You have to
become mentally programmed to be able to get so deep in concentration, so
aware of what you are doing that careless mistakes become a thing of the
past, you'll be able to multi-task "move multiple tasks to completion
at the same time" ten times better. And you won't feel the stress!
I tell my students to take it a
step at a time...’inch by inch is a cinch’ and ‘yard by yard can be
hard’. Remember that a 1% improvement each day adds up—-after one year,
well you do the math. In our school, each class builds upon the previous.
Not only on the physical level, but on the ‘inner’ (mental and character
development) level as well. Each morning, when I awake I say ‘this day
will be better than yesterday’……and I make it happen! Osu!
Prepare to be Great in 2008!
Would you like to see 2008 be your best year ever ?
No matter how great these past few years have
been, there is a great chance that you would like to see next year be your
best ever. I know I certainly do! How
have you grown and improved this past 12 months? What would you like to
achieve in the next 6-12 months? Do you have a clear picture of what you
want to accomplish in your Martial Arts training and with your health and
fitness? What goals would you like to achieve in your personal and
professional life?
Law of Dominant Thought teaches that we tend to get what we think
about the most.
What do you think about the most? What do you dream of having, being or
doing?
The clearer you are in your thinking about your wishes and desires, the
greater chance
you have of their achievement. Especially if you think it and ink it
(write it down)!
Prepare to be great in 2008 begins by having a clear picture of what great
looks like to you. The next step is to begin drafting your Wish List
2008. Most people never take the time to write down what they want. which is
probably why so few people ever achieve greatness in their lives.
Our Black Belt Champions are not like most people-- they are successful
achievers. One of the reasons for this, is they have clarity of what
they want. If you take the time now to create clarity of your dreams and
desires for the next 6-12 months, you will lay the foundation for personal
greatness. I don’t know any successful person who didn’t plan for his or
her success!
While you’re planning, help your children or those around you. That is
what we’re doing here at American Karate Studios. I recently started
teaching in the Dyna-Tot classes and I love it! Think about that for a
moment…I have been in the Martial Arts for about 41 years and I now have
decided to share my knowledge and abilities with our Little Champions to
help them with their futures! What better level for me to make a positive
contribution than with our youngest students. There is no better time than
NOW to start with ourselves to make the changes we would like to see in the
world. I like to begin each day new and in that way old doesn’t creep in
to my life.
Will you join me in my pursuit with taking this school to a Whole Other
Level? If so, you will be an integral part of my plan with preparing to be
Great in 2008…And, while we’re at it, don’t keep us a secret—I would
like you to “shout it from the rooftops’ and get those around you to be
part of our success!!!
As we approach the end of this year and the beginning of the
new one, I always take the time to reflect on the past and think of the
future. This past year has been a productive year at American Karate
Studios. I have seen the growth and development of our staff come along
nicely. The younger ones have stepped up to the plate…while our higher
ranks have helped to show the way and continue our pursuit of Black Belt
Excellence. We are ALL on a quest to be our best!
This time of year doesn’t feel complete unless I THANK YOU
ALL for your support, encouragement, and commitment to our school. I also
want to thank you for the referrals you have given us…We continue to grow
because of our joint efforts together, and I am grateful and appreciate your
part in this process.
One idea that I would like to give to you this month is: “With
the realization of ones’ own potential and self-confidence in ones’
ability, one can build a better world. According to my own experience,
self-confidence is very important…it is an awareness of ones’ own
potential. With that idea, human beings can transform themselves by
increasing the positive qualities and reducing the negative qualities. This
is congruent with our Student Creed. I always try to be mindful and present
in the moment…At night before I go to sleep, I reflect on my day and my
interactions. Most of the time I realize that I did things to the best of my
knowledge and abilities. If I find that I did not, then I know my inner work
for the next day”.
And so it goes with each day…and each day turns into the
next one…forming weeks, then months, then years. ‘We must remember to be
kind whenever possible…It is always possible’. We at American Karate
Studios wish everyone a very loving, peaceful and harmonious process to live
your days and your life! Thank you for being with us!
One of the main symbols of our
patch is the rainbow in the form of a “C”. Many years ago when the
idea came to me, its meaning was clear: It formed the first letter of my
last name (Clapp) and the first letter of many qualities which were and are
important in the martial arts school and in life outside of the school. I
will explain part of its meaning now so that your understanding is greater
and clearer.
The “C” symbolizes Creativity,
Culture, Community, Communication, Consideration, Cooperation, Compassion,
Courtesy, Commitment, Correction, Consistency, Completion, Coordination,
Condition, Concentration, Calmness, Confidence, Command, Challenge, Change,
Character, and Connection. Under each of these concepts is a deeper meaning
that can be utilized for deeper growth and transformation!
The martial arts figure in the middle of
the “C” symbolizes that the development of these qualities, values and
virtues is practiced through the art of Kenpo...thus the work spells Kenpo.
This, of course, is the major foundational system that is taught and
practiced in our martial arts school. The letters in Kenpo are done in an
oriental— font keeping in mind the roots of our heritage (China, Japan and
Hawaii) As you will notice, the “C” is an open-ended letter, and is very
important in this process in that awareness, knowledge, and insights are
always going on dynamically within us. It is in this process that we always
strive to be our best with constant and never-ending improvement (C.A.N.I.).
We need to only be open to newness and change.
As you look at our patch, you will see the
whole thing is enclosed by a blue circle. This is to symbolize that we
are whole and complete. The circle is has no beginning and no end. Blue is a
color that is calming and soothing. The idea here was to remind us that we
are embraced and held by a higher consciousness that is so much bigger than
we are. I hope this gives you a broader and deeper understanding of
something very meaningful to our school and to our student’s study and
practice of our martial arts. We will discuss the meaning of the colors of
the rainbow in the future.
We have all heard of Self-Discipline
many times but what exactly is it? How can it be used? And what happens if
we (or our children) don’t have it? Hmmmmh, that brings up a lot of
interesting possibilities but I won’t be able to cover them all in this
short article.
First, I define Self-Discipline as “an
ordered and structured method utilized to solve problems and accomplish
goals or objectives completely”. Webster’s
defines discipline as “control gained by obedience or training…a system
of rules governing conduct or practice”. We have a Student Creed that we
believe is the basis of our philosophy in our school (“I will develop
myself in a positive manner and avoid anything that would reduce my mental
growth or my physical health. I will develop self-discipline in order to
bring out the best in myself and others. I will use what I learn in class
constructively and defensively; to help myself and my fellow man and never
be abusive or offensive”. The Student Creed is recited at the beginning of
each class. We have copies of it in various forms (including stickers)
available—just ask us! This creed is a reminder for all of us.
Second, I think that a few of the main
ingredients of Self-Discipline are: Listening, Paying Attention, Following
Directions, Self-Control, Patience, Perseverance (Sticking to it),
Overcoming problems or challenges, Following up, and Finishing and
Accomplishing the Goals. This coupled with an attitude of respect, courtesy
and consideration along the way will have very positive results.
Self-Discipline or the lack of it is the
difference between success and failure in almost everything we do. As I see
it, many children are not being taught this essential habit other than in
the martial arts schools (where we teach it physically, mentally, and
spiritually). Parents are having fits with erratic behavior of their
children. But, as I see it, if the parents have not had Self-Discipline
training (thru sports, artistic endeavors, music, etc) they do not have the
skills to teach their children let alone cope with various situations in the
relationships. We can help! But, let me tell you that results don’t often
come overnight---and it takes continual practice with other like-minded
people (for support and encouragement) to develop Self-Discipline as part of
a lifestyle that can be applied and relied on in every area of one’s life.
Let me personally thank you for your support and for referring others to our
great school!
It's always great to see people training hard and keeping themselves in
top shape. Young or the Not-So-Young, the Martial Arts continues to be one
of the fastest growing ways to get in shape and stay in shape....mentally as
well as physically. Most people grow bored with the gym. ..and wandering
aimlessly from machine to machine, with little to no guidance or coaching. That
is one of the reasons why the Martial Arts is good for people of all ages.
You always have a coach, in most cases, a team of advanced level leaders
that are eager to help you to get to the next level. ..whether that is on a
physical, mental, emotional and / or spiritual level.
It's a year round "fitness with a purpose" approach
toward positive self development...and we all know we need to have something
to ‘get fit and stay fit’...to reduce stress in our lives...to develop
self-discipline so that we can apply it to any other area of our lives...to
learn in a very positive environment...to develop self-defense skills...and
to have fun learning and practicing with other encouraging like-minded
people. Another thing I hear frequently, is the need to be encouraged and
directed toward a specific goal or objective. This is why our dynamic team
of highly trained instructors are always providing feedback and setting
goals with each student for their next level of progress. If you ever have
any questions concerning you or your child’s interest or progress, please
come to us...we are here to help!
Are you on track with your fitness goals and objectives? Are you keeping
yourself at a healthy weight that looks good and feels good to you? Is
your energy and endurance at a level that allows you to do more everyday?
Are you on a good stretching regimen that is keeping you flexible from
head to toe? All the more reason to get on track and / or stay on track
with your Martial Arts training and fitness goals.
We want families to train here at American Karate Studios! And, so we
have developed our new F.I.T.— Families In Training
program! Look for more info coming soon, but please ask us about it too!!!
Remember that ‘a family that kicks together sticks together’! The
bond will last a lifetime and you will be happy that you took the first
step...Let us help you share in this wonderful experience!

with Bruce)…Former World Karate and Kickboxing Champion Joe Lewis (also a
Founder and GM of his world famous fighting system) trained with Bruce…and
George Dillman (internationally known for his Pressure Point knowledge and
abilities) was a friend and worked with Bruce when Bruce visited the East
Coast. Did you know that Mr. Jim was one of the editors of Joe Lewis newest
book? And, did you know that Joe Lewis will be here on Aug. 22 for a ‘meet
and greet and photo / book signing’ followed by a seminar?
Always search for the next level of progress & growth. Would
you rather stay in the game or be watching from the sidelines? As much as I
love to watch martial arts movies and great Martial Arts, it's much more fun
knowing that I am still in the game, climbing and growing, instead of just
watching from the sidelines. It's always a humbling, yet very motivating
experience to realize how much more there is to learn. Although we all need
to constantly work on improving our fundamentals, it really is amazing how
much more there is to learn. You just have to stay with it, persevere
and have patience to gain the rewards in the Martial Arts, in business and
in life.
I can promise you that you will last longer and stay stronger, if you
stay actively involved in the game. What game am I referring to? The
game of progressive achievement. Also known as progress, growth and
change. We must always search for the next level of progress, growth and
change. In our Martial Arts training, in our business and career, in our
financial lives, as well as in the relationships we have on a personal and
professional level. The more progressive and the more aggressive we stay,
the more progress we make. If the tree stops growing, it begins to die.
What do you want to improve in your life? It's never too late! What
bothers, frustrates annoys, irritates or makes you angry. Make a list and
check it twice (remember that?) and see what baby steps you can take to make
one change at a time. Put yourself on a schedule to do this regularly...and
pretty soon, like checking off a 'to do list' or a grocery list you will
have accomplished some major shifts in your life. I heard this long ago:
'inch by inch is a cinch...yard by yard is hard.' It makes sense and keeps
you moving forward in the game...the game of life!
To all AKS martial arts students and instructors I challenge you to
continue to be better than what you are today. If it's your attitude,
knowledge, or abilities that you think needs a little tweaked, then do it.
Think about where you are right now (point A) and where you would like to be
(point B). Now let's practice to do, be or have what we want in our martial
arts. Set a goal of year end -- that will give you 6 months. Then, at that
time check to see the progress, growth and change that has occurred. I think
you will be amazed and pleasantly surprised. Are you with me? Then, let's
get going today and start our list. I will help you anyway I can. Remember,
we may not have it all together, but together we have it all!
DID YOU KNOW that
American Karate Studios has been established in Delaware since 1970…it was
the first martial arts school open to the public in the first state. Did
you know that Jim Clapp was President of the Japanese Shotokan Club at
West Chester University where he helped to establish it…it is still going
strong 40 years later. Did you know that Judy O’Neill was the
creator of the first martial arts program in the USA for 3.5 to 7 year olds…and
that she is the highest ranked woman in the martial arts in Delaware? She
was also a former 2-time runner up in the National Championships in Kata
(forms) (1978-79). Did you know that John Sarmousakis was a former
Drum Major for two years while at the University of Delaware…and that John
was a former 2-time National Champion in Kata (1978-79)…Also, he has
ridden for Wooden Wheels Cycling team and has done many biathlons and
triathlons. Did you know Jim and Judy had a cable tv show (TV
American Karate) from 1985 –1995. Did you know that former NFL All
Pros Randy White (Dallas Cowboys DT) and Steve Watson (Denver Broncos WR)
trained here at AKS…Also, Kwame Harris (NFL OT) currently playing for the
San Francisco 49ers (and his brothers and sister) were long time students
here! Did you know that former amateur and pro boxer Henry Milligan
trained with Jim to help sharpen his skills before the 1984 Olympic tryouts.
Did you know that former ice pair skaters Todd Reynolds and Joel
McKeever (both Nationally and Internationally known) trained at AKS. Did
you know that many well known local area athletes in a multitude of
sports trained at our school over the years. Did you know that Jim
has been on the Board of Directors of Educational Funding Company since
1992. EFC helps with raising the standards in martial arts school around the
world. Did you know that Judy is an avid golfer…John is an
excellent cook…Jim writes poetry and songs (over 40 years worth)…And,
American Karate Studios has trained over 12,000 people over the past 4
decades. Did you know that we will soon launch an incredible family
program where family members will be able to train for free when enrolled in
this new family program. And, did you know we don’t want you to
keep us a secret…
Over forty years ago, on April 10, 1967, I took
my first karate class. Now, I am celebrating four decades of studying,
practicing and teaching the martial arts. I am very grateful for each day I
put on my uniform and belt and step out onto the floor to share what I have
learned with others. It gives me great satisfaction that over the years
there have been many students that have trained at American Karate Studios…I
think we number over 12,000 students now.
Many ask me if I still practice and teach…I simply say ‘yes, and that
I love doing what I do…” They always smile. I am blessed to be able to
play and work at the same time…and teach others something that I value so
highly. Then, to be able to see students progress from one change to another
is a great thing to witness and be part of!
The martial arts are an all-encompassing art…we train the mind-body
and spirit. The physical part is self-explanatory: posture, balance,
coordination, power, speed and focusing these together are integral parts of
our art. Strength, stamina and flexibility are developed along the way also.
Then, a sense of defense, distance, mobility, timing and conditioning to
move in response to an opponent are part of the physical training.
Developing both right and left sides of the body…techniques with hands and
legs…and how to do the moves with various movements are emphasized and
practiced towards the goal of perfection.
The training of the mind is emphasized during the classes as well.
Martial arts must come from the inside out! This helps one to enhance his or
her abilities to concentrate; pay attention; follow directions; have
awareness of oneself, others and the environment; develop better memory; and
focus. This helps anyone with anything that is done outside of the martial
arts classroom…in other words, it relates to one’s daily life!
The spirit in which things are done and how one relates to others in the
world are part of the martial artists training…. Otherwise, we would be
just teaching people how to street fight or be bullies. Think about
character development for a moment. We teach and emphasize how to be a good
person with qualities that are needed by children, teens and adults thru out
life. We are teaching ‘life skills’ such as goal setting, respect,
patience, self-discipline, self-control, perseverance, follow thru,
courtesy, compassion, honesty, integrity, trust, joy, appreciation,
gratitude, love and a peaceful way of existence. I think you will agree with
me that the martial arts’ ‘mind-body-spirit- teachings are so valuable
in today’s world and the future of tomorrow. Don’t keep us a secret
anymore!
This is springtime and the newness is in the air. The days are getting
warmer. Buds are starting to appear. Green colors are emerging. It feels so
good. And changes are occurring everywhere we look
We recently promoted 23 of our students to various ranks of Black Belt.
Again, I congratulate each and every one of you. I also want to thank all of
you who were there and supported, encouraged and appreciated what took place
at our great Black Belt Spectacular! It feels so good to see so many of our
community here at AKS grasp the ‘team concept’ that we’re trying to
instill in our students and families. We are coming together…great changes
are taking place inside AKS too.
I have a philosophical concept and subsequent saying I would like to
share with you in this newsletter. It is: “We may not have it all
together, but together we have it all!” That says so much, doesn’t
it? We all have our short comings, our inadequacies and areas we need help
in …but, as a song some of you might remember says (hint, it was done by
the Beatles) “I can get by with a little help from my friends”.
A sense of community is so important to us at American Karate Studios. We
view it as ‘a team that’s working together’ to achieve the values and
benefits that so enrich us all. For instance, peaceful living, respect and
cooperation are traits we emphasize. Basically getting along with ourselves,
each other and other creatures in our environment in a peaceful coexistence
that uplifts us all. This seems to be needed by our children, teens and
adults of all ages, don’t you think? Well, if we all had these Black Belt
Excellence qualities, I think the world would be so much better! But, we won’t
find it ‘out there’ and we can’t blame it ‘on them’. WE need to
EACH step forward and take responsibility to co-create the world we wish to
live in TOGETHER. And we can do it! We are doing it here at AKS…and
remember, our mission is to take these qualities, values and attitudes that
are developed inside our school and bring it outside to our communities…always
knowing that ‘we may not have it all together, but together we have it all’.
T here is a new movie out called The
Secret and it has become very popular. You may have heard about it on
Oprah or Larry King. This movie is about The Law of Attraction…namely what
you feel and think will manifest….and that we are co-creators with the
greatest power in the universe, but we don’t wait for things to happen to
us…we are partners in its manifestation.
You can find various ancient scriptures
that refer to man's ability to move mountains, create miracles, or perform
heroic deeds merely by focusing their attention, and
acting with a clear mind toward a specified end results. Now,
in The Secret movie, we're told once again that we can "create our
reality" by altering our thinking. The experts who discuss the power of
the human mind to create and transform have all accomplished great deeds by
setting a clear intention and following through with actions that move them
toward whatever it is they envision. It is now being proven that the true
power of intention - the law of attraction - lay in a combination of clear,
focused thought and action.
Those who use both the power of mental focus - imagining themselves in the
action of accomplishing their goal - and the physical actions that ensue
from their mental focus are by far more successful than those who use just
one or the other.
See, the new focus is on imagining you IN
ACTION toward your goal, as well as in the ACTION of achieving or receiving
your goal. If you are a martial
artist in our classes, you'd imagine each and every punch, kick, technique,
and kata… and see yourself doing them excellently…and feeling what it is
like to receive your next belt and eventually ‘being’ a Black Belt! A
basketball player will practice in his mind and on the court. A musician
will do likewise.
If you want to achieve great things, you have
to DO great things. And, you have to See yourself doing those great things.
Plus, FEEL what it is like to BE, DO, or HAVE these things. The law of
attraction works best if you are in action. So, Dream it, Believe it,
Feel it, and Do it…and you will Achieve it! “Never quit…and you
will get it!” We need to teach this to our children and pass on the Law of
Attraction…this will help to affect the world in a positive manner! And,
what a tremendous contribution we can make in
co-creating a world that we will be proud
of in the future!
For those who are interested, I am thinking
of holding a movie night at AKS featuring The Secret…If you are
interested, please let me know. As always, we may not have it all together,
but together we have it all.
Forty years ago I started my training in
the martial arts at West Chester University shortly after I enrolled...I
became the president of the karate club and helped Sensei Teruyuki Okazaki
for the next 3 plus years. The club is still in existence today...what a
feeling to know that something that I helped to start and keep going is
still around after 40 years! I thought about this for a while...and realized
that there aren't many things started in 1967 that are still going strong.
After telling this to a friend, he said "do you realize that you
started martial arts schools in 2 states (PA and DE) and they both are still
in existence after decades?" I smiled. I am happy to tell you this
short story so that you know some of my martial arts background and history.
Today, Mr. Okazaki is seventy-five years of age and still teaching and
practicing everyday. His new book "Perfection of Character" (see
our pro shop) is a great book and one that all martial artists should read.
Actually it would be great if all parents and students could read it! It
relates martial arts to everyday life. Sound familiar? Yes, this is what I
have been teaching, writing about, and practicing since I started teaching
in 1970. I am considering adding it to our curriculum as required reading.
I always honor and express gratitude to all of my teachers...for without
them I would have had a much harder time in my life. Without them, I would
not be where I am today. And, without them, I would not be able to bring you
the highest quality of martial arts that we, at American Karate Studios,
teach today. I love what I do...to come here and work and play everyday is a
blessing I cherish. Thank you all for being here with me.
We’ve just ended one year and are beginning
another. I’d like to focus on ‘new beginnings’. Every day is a new
beginning, and I think it is wise to treat it that way. Beginnings require
that we let go of yesterday to live today. How many times have we not done
something just because of an ‘old’ thought or feeling—one that was not
from the present otherwise we wouldn’t have the desire, need or want to do
it in the first place. It’s like we may not try new things because of an
auto-pilot response, but not a response we necessarily like.
Beginnings are often fearful, for we do not know what the ending looks
like or how it will change or alter our lives. However, without them we have
lost living life to its fullest potential haven’t we? Remember the life of
a child who is open to living, loving, laughing, and learning! It is that
type of life that can bring us true joy…and true happiness.
I think living in the ‘Now’ is the way to go…otherwise we’re
living in the past or future and this can cause emotions that we may not
want to invite into our lives. Negative emotions such as sadness,
unhappiness, depression, fear and despair are internalized emotions…whereas,
frustration, irritation, anger and rage are externally expressed emotions
(often directed at another in the form of blame and criticism). Both result
in the over-used term of ‘stress’ that I have concluded is simply our
perception of ‘this isn’t it’. Living in the now and accepting ‘what
is’ without the rejection and resistance (this isn’t it) can open us to
a new life filled with peace, love, joy, happiness, appreciation and
gratitude.
Remember that the pages of life are blank. We put the words on them
ourselves. The book is called ‘The Opportunity of Life’ and its first
chapter is New Year’s Day. I wish us all a Happy New Year!
As we approach the end of this
year and the beginning of the new one, I always take the time to reflect on
the past and think of the future. This past year has been a productive year
at American Karate Studios. I have seen the growth and development of our
staff come along nicely. The younger ones have stepped up to the plate…while
our higher ranks have helped to show the way and continue our pursuit of
Black Belt Excellence. We are ALL on a quest to be our best!
This time of year doesn’t feel complete unless I THANK YOU ALL for your
support, encouragement, and commitment to our school. I also want to thank
you for the referrals you have given us…We continue to grow because of our
joint efforts together, and I am grateful and appreciate your part in this
process.
One idea that I would like to give to you this month is: “With the
realization of ones’ own potential and self-confidence in ones’ ability,
one can build a better world.
And so it goes with each day…and each day turns into the next one…forming
weeks, then months, then years. ‘We must remember to be kind whenever
possible…It is always possible’. We at American Karate Studios wish
everyone a very loving, peaceful and harmonious process to live your days
and your life! Thank you for being with us!
Patience and persistence
make dreams come true. It’s easy to get frustrated and impatient while
working hard to achieve dreams that still seem far away. When you get that
little thought to give up, remember this old saying: “Winners never quit,
and quitters never win!”
The positive energy you create paves the way for your dreams to come
true. Just when you think you may have exhausted all your possibilities, you
will find another way—a better way—and, more importantly another day to
live your dreams. Remember that if errors or mistakes come up, all you have
to do with these obstacles is to work thru them or go around them. Choose to
keep focusing on your vision…and, ‘know’ that ‘what the mind can
conceive and believe, you can achieve’.
I think that if all parents, teachers, political and religious
authorities were to focus on this concept, the world would be a better place
today and tomorrow.
It is very important during this creation process to do one thing and
that is this: It is very important that what you ‘feel’ about
what you ‘believe’ is in alignment. So often we have visions of
what it would be like if…or we imagine what it would be like if…or we
set goals…but we fall short. Why? Because we fail to ‘check in’ with
our feelings about what we think about! Am I clear? We need to connect with
our thoughts and beliefs (repeated thoughts) and see if what we desire and
want is in complete alignment with how we feel about it. Here’s an example…Someone
has a desire to be a Black Belt and the feeling s/he has is one of happiness
and joy of the achievement. But, s/he also has beliefs that it might be
really hard, and s/he hasn’t accomplished much in his or her life. This
belief has to change to support the feelings s/he has. So, thoughts of patience
and persistence…thoughts of starting to achieve dreams and goals in
his or her life can replace the other contrary beliefs. NOW, the feelings
and beliefs are in alignment. S/he needs to continually focus on being happy
and joyful in using the character traits of patience and persistence to
achieve his or her dream or goal of being a Black Belt. With a little
encouragement and support dreams can come true!
In his book "The Four Agreements," Don Miguel Ruiz
explains the 4 principles for living a life of value. These principles are:
(1) Be impeccable with your word. (2) Don't take anything personally. (3)
Don't make assumptions. (4) Always do your best.
How elegantly simple! But simple wisdom isn't common practice. While most
of us believe we are impeccable with our word, we know others who are not.
And most likely, others, from time to time, consider us far less than true
with our word. The Four Agreements are deceptively simple, yet difficult to
apply. With practice, they're extremely effective, providing a way to
experience inner peace and happiness.
Each agreement is self-directed. It's not about what you can
do to change someone's behavior. Rather, these guides teach us how to
respond appropriately to others' difficult behaviors and develop smoother
relationships. So, how do you apply these principles? Let's examine each
one.
1. Be impeccable with your word. Speak with integrity. Say only
what you mean. Avoid using words to speak against yourself or to gossip
about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
2. Don't take anything personally. Nothing others do is because of
you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own
dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't
be the victim of needless suffering.
3. Don't make assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and
to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you
can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one
agreement, you can completely transform your life.
4. Always do your best. Your best is going to change from moment
to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick.
Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid
self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.
Practice: Become more mindful. The next time you begin to
gossip, assume something or fail to clarify, stop yourself. If you sense
you're taking something personally, back up and think before you speak. Ask
yourself, "How can I make this situation better?" Instead of
trying to change another person, make an impact on someone you can really
change: yourself.
ON BUILDING SELF ESTEEM:
Have you ever been faced with trying to stay
positive when others around you are negative? Or when the everyday news is
filled with fear? Negative people can be a challenge to be around. They can
bring you down and drain your energy. But, there are things you can do to
remain positive in the face of negativity. I would like to share some ideas
with you.
Let the negativity pass…Whatever
you do, do not argue with a negative person. Arguing only adds fuel to the
fire. A negative person will feed off any negativity that will strengthen
his or her mood or attitude…the negativity will intensify and the
situation gets worse before it gets better. Sometimes the best thing to do
is remain silent and let the negativity pass. Negative
people need love…You know how difficult it
can be to give love and positive attention to negative people…But, that is
often exactly what they need. Deep inside that
mean and critical person is a person that is usually afraid s/he is
unlovable. It is our challenge to rise above the negative attitude and show
love to the person inside..
Focus on the Positive…If you try
really hard, there is always something positive to be found in any
situation. Pretend you are on a treasure hunt and search for any gold or
jewels you can emphasize. Remember, even a negative person has positive
qualities. They forget about all the great things they are doing. Be gentle
and remind your grumpy friend or family member to look for the pot of gold
at the end of the rainbow. . Keep your own negative thoughts in check…If
you do nothing else but focus on managing your own negative thoughts and
behavior, you will come a long way toward remaining positive. A negative
attitude is contagious, but a positive attitude is as well. Hang out with
positive people that encourage you to be your best self. Use positive
affirmations to overcome negative self-talk. Express your gratitude for all
the positive things in your life. Take the time every day to watch all the
beautiful things going on around you. Read inspirational material and listen
to joyful music. Take care of yourself spiritually. Do whatever you have to
do to remain positive and happy despite the negativity you face. The world
will be a better place because of you and your attitude. And you never know,
you just might help a negative person make a change to a better way of
living. We work on doing this in our school everyday…Thanks for your help
in making this world a better place!
I recently returned from a trip to Wales, and I would like to share some
of my experiences with you. I was invited over to teach at Sara and Brent
Burman’s academy. I taught them Filipino stick fighting, energy healing
techniques, and shared my philosophy with them...they loved it! I have been
invited back over to teach as soon as I can arrange my schedule to do so.
This was the first time I have taught outside of the states. I had
previously taught instructors from other countries that came to the USA, but
had never taught on foreign soil. Needless to say, I had a wonderful time as
they were great hosts and took good care of me...I am very grateful for
their friendships, enthusiasm to learn, and for their sharing with me
information about their style and system of teaching karate and kickboxing.
Since coming back to AKS, I have
incorporated what I had learned into our teaching and our classes. I am
currently working on teaching all of the instructors these new techniques
and methods. They have all reacted enthusiastically….and have been
including them in their classes. More to come! You will see and/or feel the
increase of the pace of classes, more emphasis on conditioning, different
types of cardio and foot work exercises, and drills to increase
effectiveness. I hope the parents and students are pleased with the
inclusion of these new ideas...I would love to hear your feedback.
As far as Wales is concerned, this
country is beautiful!!! I was in the northern part of it which was
mountainous and very green...with lots of sheep and cows. The people lived
in villages unlike anything I’ve seen in this country...they all seem to
be very supportive of each other...and it seemed like they all knew each
other. There are no weapons there, so fear and violence was not as nearly
widespread as here. I met many people and made a number of friends while
there. There is a very peaceful atmosphere there which appealed to my soul.
I felt very much at home there… like I had lived there before.
Ready…Aim…Fire! We’ve all
heard this before, right? But, did we ever think about what it means in our
daily life? Right now…at this time…and in this moment…What if I told
you something that you might remember forever and that might help to change
your life from one of doing the same old thing…to one of living new and in
the present? What if this new information could bring you anything that you
want to Have, Do, or Be? And what if you could put to rest anything that you
didn’t want to feel or think? Well, read on and get out your indelible
marker…because you may not have an excuse anymore when it comes to feeling
or thinking anyway that does not suit your purpose.
Ready…Aim…Fire! This is a profound statement that assumes one is
focused and concentrated…and has the potential to act with the proper
action. And, that the actors (by definition, one that acts and takes action
has to be an actor!!! Right?) are participating in the present moment with a
sense of profound purpose. What if we lived our lives this way? Acting with
a sense of profound purpose…Profound Purpose in the Present moment (…”P.P.P.”)…
Ready…Aim…Fire! It doesn’t mean that we act out our actions from
yesterday’s thoughts and feelings. It doesn’t mean that we think and
feel from yesterday’s behaviors and habits. And it doesn’t mean that we
live our life from what was good for us yesterday or in the past. It demands
that we Live Our Life From This Present Moment…which then keeps us Always
Living Life New!!!
Ready…Aim…Fire! This type of thinking and feeling will mean that we
need to be consciously aware and choose conscious choices for us today…at
this time. We will become aware of choices made from yesterday’s out dated
thoughts and feelings. And we will understand that our choices today will
result in actions that will be more in alignment of how we feel and think
today, not yesterday. Wow! What if we then Attracted to us those thoughts,
feelings, and experiences that were going to give us profound experiences
each day of our life…Hmmmh…we might just feel alive each day…and Live
Life with Purpose in the Present. Ready…Aim…Fire!
We have often heard someone say that s/he would like to become
this or that. In the martial arts school, we set the goal of being a
Black Belt for each student and do everything we can to help each student
achieve this goal. But, what has happened to many students in the past is
they quit after attaining a Black Belt. This boggles most instructors minds!
I would like to say that becoming a Black Belt is a lot different
than being a Black Belt. Years ago I came up with the phrase that is
used internationally now: “A Black Belt is a White Belt that never quit.”
I would like to add onto that now….”A Master is a Black Belt that never
quit.” I think if every student (and parents) knew the life-time benefits
of the martial arts, they would continue to practice and train. The martial
arts can benefit a person in many ways: physically, mentally, emotionally
and spiritually. But, these areas all have stages of development to go thru.
Each one of them can be viewed as a reason to start and continue with
martial arts training.
In my approximately 40 years in the martial arts, I have seen many people
come in for one reason and stay for others. After accomplishing
transformation in one area (as mentioned above), a person can find that the
martial arts helps them with improving other areas of his or her life.
Again, being a Black Belt is ‘a work in progress’...It is a
method of Self-Discovery and then continually working on certain qualities,
values, and attitudes to attain Mastery —.Mastery
over negative influences that distract us from realizing our maximum
potential individually, within relationships, or within the society as a
whole. We have nothing to fear, but possibly the magnificent beauty of our
greatness...and, once we experience this, we seek to be extraordinary in
every part of our lives! This is our quest: to experience constant and
never-ending improvement...to learn to become a true human being!
This is the beginning of Springtime...the beginning of the second
quarter...and the beginning of a new journey for 15 of our newly promoted
Black Belts. I remember when I received my first degree Black Belt about 35
years ago...my instructor, Dennis Nackord, said “Now you can begin to
learn…” I didn’t quite know what he meant, but decided to observe
myself along the way. Looking back at it now, no truer words were spoken
concerning getting a Black Belt. The learning was just starting.
Many people look at getting a Black Belt as
the end of a long process of training...it is a shame! I say that because
years ago when I created the saying which is used around the world now…”A
Black Belt is a White Belt that never quit,”... I meant for a student to
keep going no matter what the obstacles were because perseverance and
patience will bring to you the achievement of your goals. Remember ‘goals
we set, are goals we get’. The rewards always follow perseverance and
overcoming our challenges.
Today, many children and young teens received
Black Belts which were created by adults for adults originally. There were
many qualities that one had to develop thru this mind-body-spirit
discipline. Qualities that were not attainable in the youthful
years...qualities that had to be recognized, acknowledged, and worked with
to last thru out one’s life. This was why I mention that adults were the
recipients of Black Belts and became Masters. But, since the 1980’s many
children joined martial arts schools, and many Black Belts have been
awarded. Our wish as teachers is that the young children keep training in
the martial arts thru out childhood; thru the possibly troublesome teen
years, and into adulthood so that their ‘new bodies and physiques’ can
adjust to their growth; their minds mature; their emotional structures
develop; and, they learn the spiritual aspects so as to become great leaders
and citizens of our communities…
As we deal with our day to day challenges, I
am very grateful to share with you and your children...and to provide a safe
haven for us to all join together in a supporting and encouraging
environment at AKS. Thank YOU!
Have you ever found yourself
obsessing about a situation that doesn’t seem to be working for you? It
could be an unbalanced relationship; frustrating situations at work with
your boss or co-worker. Or, maybe you’re depressed with your body size,
shape or overall health. Whatever the case, you find yourself entangled in
the situations of life. Your “energy well” has become depleted. You
feel, drained, off balance and unable to find your center.
The first step in the solution is to “Stop
the Leaks!” The top three energy leaks are caused by: 1. perception 2.
obsessing 3. stressing. When you live in a state of stress and frustration,
you’re like a container with holes in it. When you’re constantly
thinking about your problems, all the energy you pour into this container to
move throughout your day leaks out. As a result you become drained,
exhausted, and frustrated. Stressful living then becomes a self-fulfilling
prophecy.
The first step in stopping the leaks is to get honest and take an
assessment of the situation. First, name the things you can’t change in
the situation. You can’t change other people’s way of thinking, feeling,
or behaving. You can’t change the way others express themselves in the
world. Stop trying! There are predetermined situations in your life you can
do nothing about. Accept them. Without acceptance, you will
not stop the leaks. Until you stop leaking your energy into things you can’t
change, you’ll always be un-empowered in life. As you take time to assess
stressful situations, ask for the wisdom to be discerning in the things you
can’t change. Ask for the courage to change the things you can change.
(perception, obsession, etc.) Move into the mindset of acceptance.
The second step in the solution is to
“reframe.” Now that you’ve stopped the leaks and are at a place of
acceptance, you are ready to reframe. Reframing is about recreating the
scenario in your mind to one that works for you. One that brings you peace
and makes you feel OK. In other words, you have the power within your mind
to tell the story in a way that makes you feel good about yourself. In an
unbalanced relationship, stop expecting someone else to make you feel a
certain way. Accept and take responsibility for the way you feel and how you
process and express your feelings. Then, reframe the relationship in your
mind into one that you express your love and respect to your partner. You
become the one who feels loving. Living and acting from this place of love
changes the dynamics of the relationship.
If you are frustrated about a situation at work, stop blaming, projecting
and attacking others. Stop the leaks. Reframe the position you have at your
job into one that brings you peace. As you work day by day with this
attitude of peace and empowerment, you will be amazed how work seems to
change around you. Apply these same concepts to body issues. Stop being
angry and critical about your body. Begin to reframe your relationship with
your body into one that is more loving, peaceful, and accepting. Your body
will respond with more energy and strength.
I challenge you this week to change a situation in your life by using this
process. Experience how fulfilling and overflowing with abundance your life
can truly become when you “Stop the Leaks and Reframe.”
Is it possible to have the same experience day after day and view it as a
new one each time? In eastern philosophy, it is called ‘zen beginner mind’.
Over the years, many people have asked me ‘how can you still teach
beginner students after all these years (over 35 years)? My answer is always
the same and a simple one: I have never taught that person today...how they
are .physically, mentally and emotionally that day is a totally new
experience for me. This is an example of zen beginner mind.
I found that with this perception, every class is a new class. In fact, I
have never taught it before! This helps me to be able to be ‘fresh’ when
teaching. It also applies to taking a class (which I continue to do to
advance my knowledge and abilities). I think we can all cultivate this type
of outlook and viewpoint with our life’s experiences. As a student in the
martial arts, it helps with the process of progress...coming into the school
class after class, week after week, month after month, year after year...and
seeing it as ‘new’ each time. It takes discipline to have this
viewpoint, but once you practice and acquire it, it makes many things in
life much easier!
Have you ever seen a baby look at everything like s/he was seeing it for
the first time? It is because they are! And we can be like that too...It
takes being ‘present’ in the moment. Take a few minutes each day and
begin to look at something like you’ve never seen it before...explore
it...really give it your total attention. In the martial arts we call it ‘focus’.
Let your senses fill up with all the beauty of the experience. Give it your
total and undivided attention without distraction or disruption. You will
find that by doing this, you will want to do it more and more. I like to
live my life this way and practice teaching the martial arts like this. Try
seeing or taking our classes like this...better yet, try living your life
FULLY.
January is a time of beginning, renewing, and setting goals or objectives
for the present and future. It is a time when people want to make
changes...with themselves; what s/he are doing; and, possibly with
relationships—who they want to do it with. But, changes take more than
thought and new beginnings...they take dedication and commitment to the new
idea and/or action.
Patience and perseverance are two skills that are necessary for success.
Many people have great ideas and initiate actions with good intentions to
follow thru. But, the difference between those that succeed and those that
don’t is the little extra effort that is sometimes needed. This is also
the difference between ordinary and extraordinary. I am always looking for
extraordinary in my life and I am willing to go the extra mile to get It.
There seems to be three stages that we must go thru to achieve what we
want. The first stage is the ‘novelty’ stage where everything is new.
This is where it is fun...we share it with others...we love being involved
with something new and different. The second stage is the ‘perseverance’
stage where challenges arise...this is the stage we need to work things
out...the time where encouragement is needed...and sometimes a change in
tactics and strategies. The third stage is the ‘reward’ stage where the
goals we set are the goals we get...we achieve what we had in mind. We
become a Black Belt so to speak. But, do we stop here...Nooooo: we reset our
goals and objectives.
So, studying a discipline such as a martial art or life, please remember
these three stages. They just might serve as a reminder that we are all in a
state of development our whole life.
When I was growing up from a child to an adolescent, the holidays were a
very special time for me. It was about receiving...Receiving surprises,
gifts, relatives, a yummy dinner, and maybe a snowy Christmas day. My mother
and father always taught me to say ‘thank you’ and give whoever gave me
a present a big hug. Being that I was a shy boy, the latter took an effort
sometimes. But, on Christmas morning, I was never disappointed...I always
got what I wanted and more. Yes, my parents were very generous to my
brother, sister and I. I’ll always remember those days of asking;
wondering if I would get what I wanted; and, being surprised that somehow I
did.
As I grew into a teenager, I had earned and saved money thru jobs
around our house and various gifts thru out the years (birthdays,
etc)...this gave me the means to buy gifts for my family members. The search
for the right ideas was very enjoyable for me. Then, to be able to give a
gift on Christmas day and see the expression on my family members faces was
wonderful. I really liked it when it was the perfect gift for them. Don’t
get me wrong, I still enjoyed opening the gifts I received, but now my
experiences had expanded to include giving to others.
As an adult, I remember my father saying to my mother something that I
will always remember: “I think Jim would be happy if we gave him a
polished rock…” He was right. By then, I had come to understand that
giving and receiving were ways to express the interchange of love, joy, and
gratitude from one soul to another. So, therefore, it mattered not what the
gift was...only the spirit, thoughts and feelings behind it.
Today, I want to express my love and gratitude for the great joy I have
when coming to our school each day. I am truly blessed...Everyday is the
birthday of newness. Thank you for sharing it with me!
I am reflecting on our recent Black Belt Celebration and the seasons
ahead all at the same time. What a picture it forms in my mind! The common
denominators that I see are people coming together for a purpose, sharing of
ideas, love and gratitude. How wonderful it is to see people helping and
supporting each other while enjoying themselves. It brings a warm and fuzzy
feeling to my heart and soul. (Again, thank you to all of you who helped to
make our Black Belt Celebration a raging success and a great time had by
all.)
Thanksgiving time can be a time of reflection…a time spent in a
grateful state of mind. Actually, anytime can be a time of gratefulness. All
we have to do is bring it to our awareness. It is one of the most important
virtues, but also one that lately seems to be a rarity. I start and end each
day with my thoughts of gratitude. It seems to put me into the right frame
of mind. It also goes hand in hand with Love. Yes, they seem to make a nice
couple.
These qualities are what make a profound difference in our lives
individually and collectively as a community, nation and world. Think of the
last time someone expressed genuine and sincere gratitude to you…How did
you feel? And think of the last time you expressed genuine and sincere
gratitude to someone else…How did you feel? I think if you took a moment
to bring it to your awareness you will realize that it did make you feel
good or great.
With each day, we can all make a commitment to give and receive…Receive
what life has to offer and give thanks for it. Receiving the gifts of nature
(sunlight, fresh air, birds singing, starry nights, beautiful autumns or the
first snow of winter) can help to bring you to a higher state of mind. Also,
being open to receiving from others whether it is a material gift, a
compliment, or a prayer can lift you to a higher level. And when we
acknowledge ‘this gift’, then we can give thanks. Giving and receiving
thanks is an art that needs to be brought back to our awareness and
re-focused in our minds each day. Our world will be a better place for it.
Let’s do it together now. Thank you!
The AKS Black Belt Promotion and Celebration this fall is a very special
one! I wish you all could be there to congratulate all of our new Black
Belts. This will be a first for American Karate Studios and Delaware: two 7th
Degree Black Belts will be awarded on Oct. 19th. Judy and John
will become two of Delaware’s highest ranked martial artists! This will be
very prestigious for AKS. So please join me in congratulating both of them.
They have been in the martial arts for a combined 65 years (John started in
1972…and Judy began in 1974). I am very proud to bestow these high ranks
on them.
I would like to tell you a little bit about each of them. John began as a
12 year old and progressed thru the ranks quickly and earned his first
degree Black Belt in 1976. He was a National YMCA weightlifting champion
during that time also. He was a National Kata Champion in the later 70’s,
and won many weapons and empty hand kata titles during his illustrious
competition career. For two years at the University of Delaware he was the
Drum Major for the marching band. After graduating from college (BS in
Business), he began working full-time at AKS as a program director and
teacher (1981). In the 80’s he began competing in triathlons (swim, bike
and run), and became a member of the Wooden Wheels Cycling Team, in which he
is still active He continued to add to his knowledge under my tutelage and
became a great teacher and leader for our school. During the later 90’s he
married Andrea (a Black Belt herself) and fathered two children Ana and
Kaden (both are in our programs). After all these years together, I am very
grateful to have John as a fellow martial artist, a co-worker, and a friend.
Thank you and congratulations…you are an excellent example for future
generations to look up to.
Judy began her training at the University of Delaware in 1974. I met her
the same year. We were married in 1975 after her graduation from college.
She went on to get her Masters in Physical Education and remained to teach
and coach (Lacrosse and swimming) at the university. She compiled excellent
records with her teams in each sport. In 1979, she left the university and
joined me full-time to help run AKS. Judy competed in many tournaments like
John and was runner up in the National Championships in Kata in 1979. She
competed regionally in kata and sparring and won many trophies! After seeing
the benefits for children ages 3 to 6 to practice martial arts, she created
and designed the Dyna-Tot program in 1985. This program was a first in the
USA, and am became a model for many programs in place around the world
today. In the 90’s, she became an accomplished equestrian and competed in
many local competitions. In 1998, she created the Fitness Kickboxing program
for AKS, and helped to make it one of the largest in the country at the
time. Around 2001, Judy decided to take up golf…she continues to excel at
it today. She recently remarried, and together with her husband, Jeff, they
enjoy the challenge of hitting that little white ball exactly where they
want it to go. Thank you, Judy, for our beautiful years together in marriage…for
your partnership in this school…and for being an outstanding role model
for women and future generations of martial artists. Congratulations! You’re
the best!
This month I am going to feature the Black Belt paper of Chris Young who
was just promoted to 3rd Degree Black Belt (he is now off to college...we
will miss him a lot!) I hope you enjoy reading it and can use the wisdom in
helping yourself or your child in the study of martial arts at AKS!
“I have been studying Kenpo karate since I was 7—more than 10 years.
There were times during those 10 years that I considered giving it up,
because I had too much to do, or I was too busy. Despite this, I continued,
because I felt that karate was important to me, and I knew that those 10
years would not be wasted. In that time it has taught respect for myself and
for others. I don’t take karate so that I can beat people up or to show
off or to prove myself to anyone. I take karate to improve
myself in both body and mind. In these 10 years, I have grown from a mere
child into a young man, but my karate has always been with me and studying
Kenpo has helped me along that road. Karate gives me an inner strength that
lets me press on in the hardest times, and the self-discipline that allows
me to excel at anything I am willing to try. Karate has strengthened my
body, keeping me active, healthy and fit, and it has allowed me to
experience everything to the fullest. Since I was small, I have grown up
with karate. It was my companion as I went through school, giving me the
focus and perseverance to do as well as I could. It gave me confidence and
dedication through my awkward younger years, and the lessons that I took
from it will help me as I go through life. Karate has taught me to trust in
myself, and to apply myself to any talk despite whatever challenges or
obstacles may face me. It has taught me to respect other people, and to help
them when they need assistance. It has given me the inner strength that
helps to overcome hardships, and the outer strength that helps me to
break through any obstacle in my path. Even though I am no longer the child
I was when I started my training, the teachings of my karate are still just
as important to me now as ever before.”
Gratitude is an attitude ...Is this
something we do or something we are? For the longest time now, I’ve
considered this a quality of the Higher Being (namely God, Universe, Spirit,
Life Force, Source of All That There Is, etc) and that we’re to reflect
this quality in all that we do. Sometimes we need to be reminded. Sometimes
it’s tough to do when things have us down. But, when all is said and done,
God radiates out from us as Peace, Love, Joy and Gratitude to name a few of
our mind-set attitudes that we can cultivate and express.
Over time, this attitude of gratitude seems to have gotten lost
amongst the conditioning processes of ‘us versus them’…’don’t
trust anyone’…’get them before they get you’…’win at all costs’...and
the deterioration or lackadaisical attitude of mediocrity that has crept
into our society. This coupled with a paranoia or fear of terror and it’s
no wonder we get dummied down to think that.
Gratitude and love have to be earned, not freely given as a spiritual
expression of ourselves. I
think a new paradigm and change is needed for us all to go forward not
only in our own individual lives but as a society as well.
So to start with, how about us all trying something for the month of
August: Namely being grateful...thinking about gratitude...feeling
grateful...speaking about how grateful we are to each other...acting with
gratitude...sharing gratitude with each other in any way we can think
of...and celebrating gratitude...Let’s send our prayers of gratitude to
anywhere in the world...we can replace prejudices, hatreds, war-like
thinking, or any thoughts of violence and abuse with thoughts of gratitude.
If we are ending a job or relationship, we can be grateful for the
opportunities and time we shared. If we have a health issue, be grateful you
are alive to help heal yourself. I am grateful to be able to share this with
each of you at this time...and it is my hope that you share it with someone
else thru out your days. Think of how different this world can be with
gratitude and love.
"Balanced…Centered…Calm…and Peaceful…” Qualities
of a martial artist? Or qualities for us all? I have given this a lot of
thought recently and I would like to share this with you. These are
character traits of strength and have been admired and sought after and
attained by many of us over the centuries. Sometimes we express them…sometimes
we don’t. We all know them when we see them in another person. There seems
to be an ‘air’ about them exhibiting these spiritual traits for all of
us to remember and reflect upon for ourselves. But, since everything seems
to be a question of development, how do we develop them and what does it
take to do it? And, what happens when we are faced with situations,
experiences or relationships that challenge the very essence of this base?
What can we do then as an individual and as a community?
As a martial ‘artist’ I have been focusing on developing these
qualities with every student, regardless of age, thru out the decades that I’ve
been teaching. Some of it is obvious to the eye…some is not. But, working
on the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical levels has always been my
goal and I have used the martial arts school as my ‘laboratory of life’.
Physically, the above traits may be easier to see their progress. For
instance, we lose our center and balance when we do a kick or we don’t.
Mentally and emotionally, we can get angry, frustrated, upset or we can
remain calm, balanced, centered and peaceful. But, what happens if we
experience the former (sometimes called negative emotions)…what can we do?
One technique that I find useful is to ‘acknowledge’ and ‘recognize’
when it is occurring or has occurred (sometimes a relative or close friend
may tell you)…then, ‘experience’ what it feels like to my body. Simply
does it feel good or not so good. Next, ‘focus’ on what I would like to
have happen (in this example, being balanced, centered, calm and peaceful
again). Lastly, take a breath and ‘center on that feeling’ and bring it
to the ‘now’ or ‘present’ moment. It might take a few (or many) more
breaths, but hang in there…relax with it, for the other emotional states
will pass and new ones will come.
Our mental and emotional states can either be aligned or not aligned with
who we are spiritually. It might even bring us to review our beliefs and
whether they are ‘outdated’ or ‘updated’. If we continue to feel out
of balance, etc we might want to ‘check in’ (meditate, contemplate, or
pray on it) for an answer. Sometimes it takes time, but we eventually get
one. Then, we need to have courage to act on it to change our thoughts,
beliefs, habits or lifestyle. Seeking out support and encouragement from
others in our world is a good use of our community if we need it…and who
doesn’t from time to time? As the Beatles sang, “I can get by with a
little help from my friends…” Finally, we need to remember to enjoy the
process…for this puts us ‘in joy’…Find comfort in these words…they
just might change your life.
Live Life Fully! Be Happy ! These
words came to me recently and I’ve pondered their meanings that I would
like to share with you. I know we try to do this and sometimes are
successful…other times there seems to be obstacles or hurdles that get in
our way. So what do we do when they occur is a good question. Another
question is can we achieve these goals by ourselves? Also, what happens when
others are involved in our lives? And, is this about ‘doing’ or ‘being’
or both?
Like our gardens, we need to nurture what we would like to have become
full bloom in our lives. Sometimes it takes time. We need to exercise
patience. We need to wait for the fruits of our labors. We need to have
faith and trust that all will be fine. Aren’t we all here to love and know
a deeper sense of it along the way? Aren’t we here to broaden our
experiences and live what life has to offer? This takes courage oftentimes…to
break out of our comfort zones…take a leap…and know that we’ll be fine…and
better off than from where we were. The qualities that it takes to do this
are life building character traits. It is the same as when we go from belt
to belt in the martial arts…sometimes it is scary going to the new
classroom with new requirements and new people there, but with a ‘little
help from our friends’ we adjust, move on and do just fine.
What do we do with the thoughts, feelings, obstacles, etc that come up
and seemingly slow us down or get in the way? Well, we can evaluate them and
then take the appropriate action(s) to keep moving forward towards our
goals. This helps build focus, self-discipline, patience, perseverance,
commitment, and a positive attitude towards being able to overcome anything
that gets between our goals and us. Or we can learn adjustment, adaptation
and flexibility…in other words, we might need to change some of the things
we’re doing to get where we want to be. All in all, if it is right for us
and helps us to live life fully and be happy we keep moving in that
direction.
Often we need the help of others…after all we are social beings too.
This is what community is about…helping others if needed. Support and
encouragement is so important! When we might be faced with challenges this
support is greatly appreciated…we just need to be open and accept it.
Teams are based on working with others (teamwork develops). What happens
when others are involved in our lives during this journey to be happy and
live life fully? Hopefully, they are supportive and see our purpose in being
happy and living life fully…our soul and spirit inform our heart, mind and
body and we know…we know what will bring us to this happiness and
fulfillment. And if being happy is what we really want for ourselves and
others, we need to support them or get out of their way (for we each are
responsible for our own happiness)…So, Live Life Fully and Be Happy…For
today is the first day of the rest of your life!
After the flowers are planted in our garden, we must be attentive to make
sure they get the proper water and nutrients that will help with their
growth and transformation from seeds to fully bloomed and beautiful flowers.
Then we will realize the results of our efforts. This is all part of the
process in nature. We must also remove the weeds that might arise so as not
to inhibit or strangle our flower’s development. This is what we must do
in our lives as well.
I have been planting seeds for my own development both professionally and
personally. I am looking at what it is I want for my future. What do I want
to change in my life? What patterns are no longer useful? What new ideas
have come that now need support and nurturing? And what work do I need to do
with myself to help make these desires come true? I want my own internal
flowers to become full bloom and beautiful on the outside too!
Sometimes we know what we want, but we hesitate to make the necessary
changes. This is where we must trust and have faith in a higher power than
ourselves. Prayer, meditation, quiet time, and reflective / contemplative
thinking can help us. I set aside time each day to clear out the weeds from
my garden. This helps to get rid of ‘stinkin’ thinkin’. I know it can
be difficult sometimes, but with focus, self-discipline and follow-thru we
can do it. Hey, don’t we see our children do it each day with their home
work, karate lessons and chores around the house? It might take a little
encouragement and support but using these character traits the tasks do get
done.
When we finally make our minds up that this is what we want in our life’s
garden, we need to ‘stay the course’...Visualize what it will be like to
have that beautiful garden; strengthen our intentions; and, make commitments
everyday towards what we want to ‘real eyes’ in our lives. We can teach
this to our children and help them manifest their desires too.
Smile...and Be Happy! For this is the first day of the rest of your life!
Live it fully and Love it truly!!!
Springtime is a time for newness. New ideas…new relationships…new
starts…new growth and transformation…new challenges…new achievements.
It’s about bringing newness into our Life. Since Love is a quality of
life, it’s about bringing newness into this area as well. What are you
doing to reflect what is going on in nature?
We all have waited for this time to arrive. Winter has accomplished its
purpose and is leaving us. As we awaken from our dark sleep remember that it’s
time to cleanse and clear away the winters stagnation. I am aware that the
transformation of judgments, the understanding of others and the
understanding of how to transform my deficits into assets is a full time
job. I am a work in progress…and work at this daily.
Spring is the time to plant new seeds. Flowers will bloom as a result. I
am planting a seed to create more balance within myself and among all those
whom I know and to those I will meet. As the sun becomes stronger, so can
the light become with us. So lets breathe in the new spring air and quiet
our minds, plant our seeds, and then decide how we will nurture them. By
summer we will see the flowering and by fall the fruits can sustain us into
the next phase. Entrain (join with) to the natural rhythms of the earth and
feel the strength that is always lying deep within us awaiting a need. This
spring remember to enjoy the ‘gifts’ that the universe/God has put
before us!
I would like to thank all of the people that I’ve met thru being in
this school…thank you for your support and your love. As we move forward
in the growth and development of our school, I would like to express my
gratitude for your patience, kindness, considerations, joy, and happiness
with being a part of this ‘work in progress’. As always, I will continue
to do my best to bring the best to you! Happy Spring to you and yours and
may your seeds nourish you! Smile and Be Happy!
When I see the world in its best light, I
picture much love being shared. I see a world of peaceful co-existence where
we honor the differences in people and celebrate our commonality. The sun
shines frequently but moisture is abundant as well. There is happiness
filled with tears of joy…yet, sadness is there to point the way if we get
out of balance or off centered. There are amazing green plants and trees
that capture our imagination with their beauty. The new growth that we
experience inside is paramount to our beauty outside. In other words, as we
transform the areas of our lives that need changed, we radiate in a most
beautiful way…oftentimes, others ask what is different or say we look
really good and might ask what is ‘new’. There is an incredible variety
of amazing flowers on this earth…all have a beauty beyond measure. We,
too, have our own garden…it is one that blossoms with new inspiration…new
love…new life. Both need seeds to be planted. Both need to have sunshine
and water. Both need to have weeds eliminated so that the very nature of the
true self is not suppressed, strangled, or destroyed. We need to take care
of our beautiful gardens on this earth…and ourselves.
The ocean beckons us often with its vastness…its
sparkles and glistens when the light of the sun or moon shines on it. Water
makes up around 70% of the planet and of our bodies. It provokes feelings
that are deep within us. We sometimes hide our feelings…cover them up…bury
them deep within us…and/or put up with them. But, what happens when we
express them freely…we are free. What happens when we are free? We emulate
the ocean…our emotions roll in and roll out like the waves. To express
ourselves naturally, without fear, helps bring us to love…and we move from
love to expressing and connecting to all that we experience. Yes, I think
this is core to our existence. If we end up holding our emotions in, we can
create dis-harmony or dis-ease. We need to cultivate this sensitivity to our
deeper selves and allow its expression freely in order to live free.
Cool breezes, gentle winds, and the freshness
of our air that is so essential for us to live on this planet feels so good
to our senses. Air and water just flow naturally. On a clear day, from a
mountain top, where we can see as far as we can see…ahhhhhhhhh…now that
is a beautiful feeling. A breath of fresh air does wonders for the soul…It’s
one to be cherished! It is a gift! Likewise, newness in our life can bring
us to a new height in awareness, experience and transformation. This
creative spark that pushes us…moves us…or can slam us like a storm can
bring about needed change just like the winds knocking off the old leaves on
trees. This spring think of the elements in your life…is it time to do
some house cleaning? When I see the world in its best light, I picture much
love being shared with a beautiful landscaped background like the flowers
blooming the first days of spring.
The Life we live is a reflection and compilation of our beliefs,
thoughts, feelings, words and actions. It is also conditioned by what we
consciously and unconsciously receive via movies, TV, internet, video games,
newspapers, magazines, parents, family, friends, teachers, and institutions.
I think we are all aware of this to some extent. But how deep does it go?
Are we as free as we think we are? Do we make our own conscious decisions
or are we unconsciously following other’s scripts? And how do we know
which one’s they are? Well, I have been exploring this question for
sometime now and I would like to share my findings with you. Some of these
come in the form of questions we need to ask ourselves.
Do we follow the government’s decisions when we know they’re not part
of our own philosophy? Do we follow our medical communities’ philosophy
and its decisions or make our own conscious choices? Have we given our
power away for making our religious decisions by following what is handed
down to us? Are we relying on people to take care of us or are we
consciously aware of what we think is best for our own well being?
This is a time when we need to rethink these fundamental questions. Our
future, individually and collectively, is at stake.
As I look back on this previous year
and ahead to this new one, I can’t help but reflect on accomplishments and
goals…and this thought came to me: How many of us look back each year on
our achievements? How many stop, take a breath, and pat ourselves on the
back for what we have accomplished? What are the ‘highlights’ or major
points for you that took place during this past year? Let’s take a moment
or two and think back to what they were…and ahead to what they could be.
For me, this question poses a challenge. Namely, I need to go back twelve
months and then week-by-week or month-by-month proceed forward. With so much
going on (and don’t we know how busy we all have gotten) this may take a
little time to reflect. But, I did it and you can too! It will prove
interesting and rewarding for you. It might show you how you’ve spent your
time; what you’ve gained from your experiences; or, what occurred in your
life that helped you change.
A major part of our philosophy in our martial arts school is a reflection
of the philosophy I have for my life: C.A.N.I. (Constant and Never Ending
Improvement). So, we are always looking for ways to improve and get better
in all areas of our lives. We have to always keep in mind our birth,
childhood, adolescence, and adult lives. They are distinctly different, yet
have some common denominators that help us become who we think we are. And
so it is with the martial arts. As a beginner, we start as a White belt
where everything is new: The Student Creed, mechanics of movements,
remembering names of techniques, philosophy, classroom protocol, and doing
things we’ve never done before. As we progress thru the belts, we start to
establish a ‘comfort zone’ (a place where we think we are who we have
become) until our teachers push us to go further and be better than what we
are. Black Belt seems to be a great goal, but doubts (judgments) as to
whether one is good enough or can put in the time required sometimes consume
one’s thoughts and feelings. But, with patience and perseverance we keep
going forward.
The community feeling of support and encouragement from staff,
instructors, classmates, family and friends help to overcome many seemingly
real obstacles. It is this feeling of connectedness that we must develop and
cherish. It is this consciousness that will help us to relate to wholeness,
oneness, harmony, and the spirituality that we all know will bring us the
peace and love that we all want in our world. As we mature in our thoughts,
feelings, words, and actions we become clearer that it is all within reach.
Thank you for joining with me on this mission.
What would our world be like? If plants and
trees had their own minds…if animals, birds, fish and insects had their
own minds…if all creatures had minds, what would we do different? Maybe
they do. But, if our thoughts, feelings, attitudes and behaviors changed for
the better, why wait until ‘science’ declares this a ‘fact’. Do we
really have to wait until ‘they’ tell us what is real and what is not?
When I started to explore this concept many
years ago, I started to notice minor changes in my life. Violence started to
be replaced by acceptance and allowing. For instance, killing insects was
replaced by capturing them and releasing them outdoors...killing other
beings seemed like I was killing part of myself...and I looked at nature a
whole lot different. Walks in the park became ‘explorations’. Seeing the
flight of a hawk became an immediate connection to something ‘higher’.
Groundhogs reminded me of the ‘solitude’ or quiet time that was
necessary for me to get away from the ‘noise’. Butterflies became a
symbol of fantasy, freedom and beauty. Yes, each of our earth’s
inhabitants started to have meaning in my life.
As time went by, I noticed that at times I
had to borrow from the earth and take a strong stance on a subject. At other
times I had to be fluid like the rivers and oceans (water) and so I learned
to be more flexible. As the winds blew, I was reminded that things
change...sometimes things get cooler and at other times they get hotter.
Hmmmmh, my emotions seemed to reflect just that...and yes, I’ve had my
share of tornadoes and hurricanes. The sunshine gave me warmth...my heart
opened up to ideas, people, and things that were never in my consciousness
prior. As the seasons changed each year, they were a reminder that life
changes. They showed me new growth (Springtime); full blossoming of an idea
(Summertime); the leaving or releasing of old and outdated belief patterns
(Autumn); and, what is underneath all that we see—the structure (Winter).
As I watched each season begin, I noticed that all of nature seem to know
what was going on, TOO...It became an Ahah! Experience each time it
happened.
Well, this month signifies another
change...it will be colder, less sunlight, and we will see the underlying
structure of nature. It might be a good time to look at our lives and see
what blesses us each day and then honor it. Gratitude takes place in the
heart...this holiday season we might be able to take a few moments and give
gratitude to the highest power in the universe...then to the different parts
of our planet...then to our communities (all the ones we belong to)...then
to our families (wherever they may be)...then to ourselves (yes we need to
love ourselves!)...and with that, I want to tell you that I am grateful to
have you in my life.
“Again….Again...Again...and Again, “ many great coaches and
teachers have been heard repeating this word over and over again. But what
does it mean within the context of the martial arts? It ‘s called ‘The
Spirit of Repetition’. It ‘s how and why a White Belt becomes a Black
Belt. It’s also how and why a Black Belt becomes a Master. And it’s what
separates ordinary from extraordinary.
Every great athlete exhibits this behavior...practicing endless,
repetitive motions over and over again. Boxers have four basic
punches...baseball hitters have one basic swing...a golfer has only a
few swings...and hockey players have a couple of shots...but, it’s their
ability to perform these under pressure (when the game or match or money is
on the line) that makes a champion!
At American Karate Studios, we pride ourselves in developing Champions
for Life...students who can take what they learn from our classrooms to
their lives outside of our martial arts school. For instance, the ability to
focus your mind on one thing at one time...like doing a punch or kick...over
and over again without being distracted by your physical, mental, or
emotional challenges is a very useful technique to practice regularly and
continually thru out your life. It’s an important life skill! Wouldn’t
you say that it’s a very useful skill if you can block out ‘unwanted
thoughts or feelings’; put your mind to the task at hand; and, accomplish
it with excellence without any distractions ? The next time you see an
athlete do this know that you are learning and practicing doing the same
thing. The means is thru “The Spirit of Repetition”...The art of Karate-do
as explained by my first Japanese teacher was: “practicing over and
over again.” And I later said that if you don’t practice, you are
practicing the art of Karate-don’t...
As we start this month of September, I know
many of us will reflect on 9-11...This is something I received that I would
like to share with you this month.
After Sept. 11th, one company invited the
remaining members of other companies who had been decimated by the attack on
the Twin Towers to share their available office space. At a morning meeting,
the head of security told stories of why these people were alive... and all
the stories were just: The 'L I T T L E' things.
As you might know, the head of the company survived that day because his son
started kindergarten. Another fellow was alive because it was his turn to
bring donuts. One woman was late because her alarm clock didn't go off in
time. One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an
auto accident. One of them missed his bus. One spilled food on her clothes
and had to take time to change. One's car wouldn't start. One went back to
answer the telephone. One had a child that dawdled and didn't get ready as
soon as he should have. One couldn't get a taxi. The one that struck me was
the man who put on a new pair of shoes that morning, took the various means
to get to work but before he got there, he developed a blister on his foot.
He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid. That is why he is alive today.
Now when you’re stuck in traffic, miss an
elevator, turn back to answer a ringing telephone...all the little things
that can annoy you, think to yourself, this is exactly where the universe
(God) wants me to be at this very moment. Next time your morning seems to be
going wrong, the children are slow getting dressed, you can't seem to find |
