COMMUNITY SERVICE

American Karate Studios has a long history of giving back to the community.  We are very grateful to have the chance of teaching so many people and helping each of them achieve their goals that we feel a strong need to give back in as many ways as we can. Plus, we feel that helping our community is a part our responsibility as citizens of the community.

We have been involved with many local organizations as well as some national ones. We have sponsored Newark National Little League teams and area soccer teams for numerous years.  We've been a part of Delaware's Adopt-a-Highway program with helping to keep Polly  Drummond Hill Road clean.

AKS has helped those less fortunate by having many canned food drives...the 'Blankets for Warmth' in 1993 was the brainchild of Jim Clapp's and helped to raise over $2500 and filled the shelters in Delaware with enough blankets to keep many warm for the winter.  We have donated many times to Emmaus House, St. Clare Medical Outreach Program, Canine Partners for Life, Child Inc., and  The Boys and Girls Clubs.

In the late 1970's, Jim and Judy helped Anthony Maczynski found the Delaware Association for Blind Athletes (DABA) and raised much-needed funds to help the team attend the 1980 & 1984 Blind Olympics.  They also helped to train Anthony (an AKS Black Belt) to win many gold medals and set National records in the Track & Field events he entered.  AKS raised these funds through their spectacular 'Fight for Sight' martial arts shows.

Nationally, AKS has been involved with Chuck Norris' Kick Drugs Out of America (KDOOA) program and has raised and contributed many dollars over the years.  This program is geared towards providing martial arts instruction in the public school system for inner city youth as an alternative to drugs, alcohol, gangs and violence.  It is a program which is gaining credibility and popularity nationwide.  We sure are happy to help so many less fortunate learn the values and benefits of the martial arts.
